EDSCHOOLATION By: Ogundele AbdQayyum Afolabi

A University degree, one  much overrated. A path to success exaggerated. Not really like usually anticipated. By when i would have graduated. And my grades celebrated. But financially have i been liberated. Cos all that theory and the reality before me now is quite unrelated. I do hope you find sense in these words i have communicated. Do not get me wrong i love that we get educated But what i despise is how the school system's been reconfigurated. So i call out to all holders of stake to look into this ailing system we have created. For it needs a rebirth and we rehabilitated, before our condition becomes exacerbated. Then we can be schooled and be assured that we're getting educated. © Ogundele AbdQayyum Afolabi (Mystique).

State of The Land By: Salawu Olubunmi

We claim to practice democracy All we see is our leaders going cracy Can we still say education is the best legacy? When the people in charge practice kleptocracy What difference does it makes if we practice theocracy Obviously we no longer have legitimacy But things were moving fine when we had the military Now let's clamour for parliamentary Our excuse now is fighting corruption All we need now is to call our ancestors for solution Lest our world goes in total demolition.

THE LAWYERS COFFEE

Being an advocate is about *WINNING WITH IN THE RULES*.  _If you want to be a good lawyer, you need to do everything it's takes to become a good lawyer_ - *COLINE FLORA* The goal is to win and the means of winning is by being persuasive. Today, we expose yet another tool of the reverred profession on how to win a case. This episode does not promise to cover everything about winning a case but at the end, it will be as the mustard seed which is tiny but grows to be a mighty tree. Winning a case is not a big thing if only most lawyers would abide by the rules governing same. It is instructive to note that winning simply means *to achieve victory, to conquer, to defeat and not be defeated*. Stated below are some of the items an advocate must possess in his repertoire to achieve a win in his case: --> *THOU SHALT NOT MISLEAD THE COURT* Misleading the court is serious misconduct and will, and rightly so, not only lead to vituperation but will also in d long run make an ...

The Prologue By: Udoka Emmanuel Chinono

The Prologue..        Uju was in her room,  waiting still. It was getting dark and the room was aglow with the TV showing 7 p.m. news. She had been waiting for him to come. Due to this, she cancelled an appointment with her friends earlier this evening. This was what she had been expecting - be with him privately in her room and tell him all she wanted them to do. If she had to force him, she was ready to do so.    She had peeped through the widow but he was not coming. So this has been a disappointment? she thought as she sat down on the bed, worried. He had not been like this since they had been together. This was the first time he had failed to fulfill his promise.   She heard a knock on the door and tiptoed deliriously to see if he was the one. As she twisted the door knob so that the door cracked open, she opened the curtain and behold, he stood before her, eyes bright with emotion.   She hugged him, exchanged some kisses wit...

Death in the pot (Ikù nìnú isásun) A short story (Part 2)

"And just as the police was embarking on their investigation, I woke up !" *Iru ála burùku wò re ?* *(What kind of a scary nightmare is this ?)*, I soliloquized as I stretched my arms and rubbed my face with my wet palms. Ordinarily, I sweat a lot and it is understandable why I am sweating more. You will understand if you belong to the "nightmares club". Funny isn't it ? Well, you don't even know this man. The man that just had a scary dream. I think I should do the introduction. Well, his name is Daniel. Daniel is a very young man of age 27. He is having a wonderful career as a banker even though his background was not that encouraging. But the Daniel's story is like that of the lotus. Well,at this point,I will pause and do a bit of advertisement. Just in case you don't know what lotus means and how it became the perfect example for Daniels background, I think you should anticipate for a book by Shobowale Lukman ; titled *EMERGE* . Well...

AVOIDING A BAD MARRIAGE. By Pastor E.A Adeboye (G.O RCCG)

After salvation, the most important choice you will need to make is who to marry. This choice is so important that if you miss it, you will suffer for long, if you get it right then you will enjoy forever. A bad marriage can affect every other area of your life. This subject is so important, so many married people are hoping to be single again so as to make the right choice. If you are single please don't just be in a hurry to get married, you have the best opportunity to prepare for it. For two people to come together to live in peace and harmony, they must agree spiritually, mentally and physically. Just like an elephant cannot marry an ant so also a believer cannot marry an unbeliever. If an elephant marries an ant how would they live, if a goat marries a fish where would they meet? You must look for a godly man or a godly woman to marry, nothing can beat this. The devil's primary target is the family. He knows that everyone belongs to a family and if he can make two...

Learn to Ignore and Overlook many things if you truly want Happiness in Life By: Edu Ziyadah Oluwafunmylola

Learn to ignore and overlook many things if you truly want happiness in life  because the easiest way to a miserable life is to think that everybody is talking about you. Never allow anyone to steal your joy from you. What people say behind your back is none of your business as long as you are true to yourself. Never worry yourself about that. Sometimes minding your own business does not keep people out of your business. No matter your situation in life people will always talk. You can never stop people from talking about you People who talk behind you are exactly where they should be "Behind you" There is a time limit for every rumor in life. Never allow freelance broadcasters put your life on hold. Do what makes you happy. *Anyone who cannot feel your pain, has no right to judge you in life. Seventy percent of those who talk bad about you behind your back, wish to be like you*. Remember this: the easiest job for the jobless is to be a critic and their populari...

THE INJUSTICE OF THE JUSTICE SYSTEM By: OLUSEGUN AKINSANYA

It's quite difficult to understand the rationale behind some of the judgments delivered in our courts of law. I still feel the rich and people that are party members of the people in authority do have preferential treatments. The law is not flat and square. It is skewed and prejudiced. I don't restrict this to the precarious jaundiced judicial system in my home country Nigeria, but the global judicial system in general: from country to country. Some are simply above the law, while for some, the law is bent to accommodate their excess and to the unfortunate ones, their hope of correct and commensurate justice is a mere dream which may only happen in heaven. I speak against the background of what happened to a house help who was sentenced to 13 years for stealing 5000 dollars. This petty thief will spend about a fifth of her life in prison, if she is blessed to live till about 70 years or thereabout. I compared the small amount that this house help stole to the money they...

● changes her name ● changes her home ● leaves her family ● moves in with you ● builds a home with you ● gets pregnant for you ● pregnancy changes her body ● she gets fat ● almost gives up in the labour room due to the unbearable pain of child birth ● even the kids she delivers bear your name Till the day she dies... everything she does... cooking, cleaning your house, taking care of your parents, bringing up your children, earning, advising you, ensuring you can be relaxed, maintaining all family relations, everything that benefit you..... sometimes at the cost of her own health, hobbies and beauty. SUKUK BOND; (A VIABLE INSTRUMENT FOR INFRASTRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT) By: ALAWIYE SEMIU

It is the philosophy of every business to minimize risk and maximize profit, this makes it incumbent on it to device a way of achieving this great mission. Sukuk bond is now a word in the sphere of the country flying around with rigorous debate and misconception of its meaning which is disconcerting its introduction in to financial market of Nigeria. " The word sukuk bond in the realm of business means nothing, but, a financial instrument certificate, similar to a bond in western finance that complies with Sharia-Islamic law which negates the idea of interest in business transaction." It also represent aggregate and undivided share of ownership in a tangible assets as it relates to a specific project or specific investment activity. An investor in a sukuk therefore does not own a debt obligation owned by bond issuer, but instead owns a piece of the asset that linked to the investment. This means that the sukuk bond holder, unlike bond holder, receive a portion of t...

Savagery Senator Shehu Sani to Ayo Fayose

“I recognise the fundamental rights of Ekiti state Governor to freedom of expression. I unreservedly condemn his divisive, inciting, provocative and mischievous tantrums and invective against President Muhammadu Buhari. The Ekiti Governor is a relic of the old order; he represents the old Nigeria of waste, of hollow ritual of noise and nuisance. Fayose is a man suffering from political depression in the aftermath of the defeat of his patriarch Goodluck Jonathan. He is a hallucinating man of the ancient, yet to come to terms with the realities of a new dawn and new Nigeria." The Ekiti Governor is a man on the loose, ready to use stones, sticks and any object to inflict harm and to be noticed. Fayose failed to stop the election of President Muhammadu Buhari by the use of false, misleading and subversive propaganda laced with lies and deceit and now resorts to firing arrows of hate, smear and distortions." He is a glorified tout, deficient in morals, character an...

YOU NEVER CARE By: Analizer

___Another loving poem coming from the Analytical ANALIZER poetically talking about the regret of a woman who fall in love but was never taken care of by her husband______ CAREFULLY READ THOROUGHLY ______Analytical ANALIZER writes✍ You always said you loved me you always said you cared That you would always be with me that you would always be there You told me that you are here for me through all the pain I feel You told me that you are with me till your very last meal But you were never there through all those endless nights You could never stop the crying after all those fights My heart tore and you just walked away My happiness went up in smoke Everything looked gray Now after all that's happened all the lies you told how could you lie again? How could you be so bold? You say it again You are here for me if I'm here for you back Sure I'll be there and I'll care You know that that's a fact But will you be here for me t...

It Is Well With My Soul

The song "It Is Well With My Soul" was written by a successful Christian lawyer Heratio Spafford. His only son died at age 4 in 1871. In 1872, the great Chicago fire wiped out his vast estate, made from a successful legal career. In 1873 he sent his wife & 4 daughters over to Europe on a summer trip on the ill fated SS Ville du Havre.  Since he had a lot of work to do, he planned to follow them later. The Ship sank and he lost his 4 daughters with the wife being the only survivor. She sent him a famous telegram which simply read, "SAVED ALONE...."  On his return home, his Law firm was burned down and the insurance company refused to pay him. They said "It's an Act of God".  He had no money to pay for his house and no work, he also lost his house.  Then while sitting and thinking what's happening to him, being a spiritual person, he wrote a song - "Whatever, my Lord, You have taught me to say - It is well, it is well with my soul...

The Truth from Uncle Joe Igbokwe

"Did the Yoruba go to war when June 12 1993 Presidential Election won by their illustrious son Chief MKO Abiola was annulled on June 23rd 1993 on a sheet of paper by IBB? Did Yoruba go to war when Abiola’s wife Alhaja Kudirat Abiola was murdered in Lagos in the morning of Jun 4 1996? Did Yoruba go to war when the winner of that historic election was poisoned on July 7 1998? Did Yoruba go to war when those who killed Abiola imposed Obasanjo on them as President in 1999? Did Yoruba accept Chief Ernest Shonekan when IBB made him to head the interim government in 1993? Yoruba rejected OBJ and Shonekan because this unique race has never been slaves to public office and yet they have remained number one in Nigeria in almost everything. This is wisdom and strategic thinking at work. Those of us who have lived in Yoruba land for years should not only learn how to wear Aso Ebi, eat Ewedu soup or dance Owambe, music.  We must have also learned other unique things from them like sha...

ARISE O COMPATRIOT

So, this morning as i scrolled through my facebook timeline, i came across a post that was advocating a _topless_ protest to happen on the 12th of June, 2017. At first i was like 'really?' because my mind immediately went to the female folks. I questioned whether they were inclusive and what silly idea is this. I think i read just about the opening two paragraphs and then scrolled to the comments box to see the reaction of fellow Nigerian youths and then i found people who thought likewise but then i also found the answer to our questions. The female folk were exempted from going _topless_. The idea still felt shallow and primitive to me because i thought of the outcome of such a protest. I had this conviction that this is a step far from ameliorating our ills as a nation which called for rather concrete measures recalling the last fuel subsidy protests, sound ones at that. "If not anything, this could be more chaos brewing as casualties could arise.  I also though...

The last letter from the sad and depressed kid

From the pen of the sad and depressed kid I present to you "The sad and depressed kid " This is my last letter to the world Begging you to see who i am I am not really a poet I am just a sad kid I tried to tell my story To convey my emotions through my words But no one seems to see between the lines to understand the hurt that lies inside No one sees beneath the vizard The mask i put on to the world I was scared to be who I am because I thought no one will understand So i put on a mask and became who they wanted me to be So when i realized my folly and tried to take of my mask No one recognize who i am No one seemed to hear me No one sees the pain,  the heart break, the torture To them these are just words But to me it is something more Looking for a way to tell them my story made me a poet Looking for a way to make people know me made me a writer But they hear but don't listen See but don't understand So i give up I put down my pen An...

Death in the pot (Ikù nìnú isásun) A short story

Oni lo'jo áyo re,lo'jo áyo re lo'jo áyo re,lo'jo áyo re ! A wonderful collection of traditional drum beats as sweet voices filled the air with romantic songs. Family, friends and well wishers exhibits their best dancing steps as they accompany the couple to a waiting decorated jeep. The couples danced joyously as they completed their final walk towards the waiting SUV jeep with majestic steps. At the entrance of the jeep, they gave the crowd what seemed like the last show of a magnificent wedding ceremony as they engaged in a serious French kiss. They then waved at the crowd, and the husband whispered confidently to his newly married wife ; "Ladies first !" The crowd cheers as the couple enters and the jeep zooms off. Lola weds Dammy ! Pin ! pin ! pin !!! The driver used the car horn to alert the gateman of their arrival. Just as the gate was opened, new set of visitors cheered the couple as the car went in. And the couple came down to acknowledge the ...

The Sun Will Still Rise Tomorrow…By: Bode Ojoniyi

The Sun Will Still Rise Tomorrow… The looks on their eyes are furlong, as they seem to peep endlessly into a seeming non-existing future, on the table before them are empty bowls, but the cups still have some water in them… Their hairs are whitish than greyish, no thanks to the moon that shines to reveal them, making them visible in the darkling night, and the clouds; they are racing in haste as if pursued by whizzes, While the two old lovers continue their banters… ‘They are gone from us, none of them is interested in us, or our ways of life. Our world to them is totally barbaric, and they will have nothing to do with it again’… ‘Our tongue is barbarians’ doom to go into extinction at the turn of the century, for they will not speak it to their children, in the fear it destroys their Queen’s English…’ ‘We are cast as irredeemable devils, in the eyes of those innocent lads, whose minds are being built on prejudice against our cultures, the legacies we hope...

Local government system in Nigeria Second Republic By: Abdulkabeer Ibn Tijaniy Al-ibadanwiyy

An Episode of a lecture delivered By; Mr Oyewo.O.O. Nigeria second republic started on the 1st October,1979 under a new constitution, The new constitution provided for presidential system of government for the first time in the new governance and administration in Nigeria. Also, the new local government which was described as a water shed in the history of local government system in Nigeria was also put to test. This republic lasted only four years, however by the end of this regime local government system in the country has been returned to the pre-1976 local government situation/reform.E.g state governors in most states of the federation abolished &proscribed democratically elected councils and returned caretaker committee who were more ready to be used as political instrument. Secondly, state governors proliferated i.e arbitrarily increased the numbers of local government within there States even when they are not financially viable. Specifically, the numbers of local govern...

EBENEZER OBEY-FABIYI

Ebenezer Obey-Fabiyi's mother, Abigail had married her first husband for 20 years without any child in Lagos. The parents of the husband separated them after the long-year barreness. "What God hath joined together was put asunder by them" In order to hide from public shame, Abigail Oyindamola relocated to Idogo now in Yewa South Local government where she met Fabiyi, an Egba man who was a carpenter and cocoa trader. Their marriage was unexpectedly blessed with a boy and later, a girl. This was the reason the name "Ebenezer" was arrived at in 1942. Meaning: "Niyin ni Oluwa ran mi l'owo de". Ebenezer Oluwaremilekun Olasupo. The name 'Obey' was merely sobriquet. "OBEY first, and then complain", Ebenezer used to command his colleagues as the "Baba COMMANDER". Ebenezer Obey attended Methodist Primary school in Idogo where he was made as band leader in the school, this honed his music talents. He formed Ifelod...

INTERESTING: Quotes from Prof. Wande Abimbola's interview on Punch

(Prof. Wande Abimbola is a former VC of OAU Ife): 1. "I was admitted to the University College, Ibadan, now University of Ibadan, in 1959. I was a state scholar. At the time, the best students in each faculty enjoyed full scholarship. They would also pay stipend to your parents and three children. That's was in the colonial times. I studied History." Very interesting! 2. "One of my classmates was Prof Oloruntimeyin. Before my final examinations, there was an advertisement for the employment of a junior research fellow in Yoruba study at the University. Yoruba as a course was not available at the time. When Oloruntimeyin saw the advert, he advised me to go for it and I was selected.  One of the criteria for the appointment was a Master's degree certificate in either divinity, anthropology, English or literature. I was not qualified in any way. A week before the interview, the director of the Institute of African Studies, the late Prof R.G Armstrong, drop...

MY LIFE By: [SIR~ANALIZER✍]

_Another inspiring and motivating poem illustrating how best you can understand life in its best meaningful understanding and how to wheel through things______*Carefully read thoroughly* The Years have passed by, In the blink of an eye, Moments of sadness, And joy have flown by. People I loved, Have come and have gone, But the world never stopped, And we all carried on. Life wasn't easy, And the struggles were there, Filled with times that it mattered, Times I just didn't care. I stood on my own, And I still found my way, Through some nights filled with tears, And the dawn of new days. And now with old age, It's become very clear, Things I once found important, Were not why I was here. And how many things, That I managed to buy, Were never what made me, Feel better inside. And the worries and fears, That plagued me each day, In the end of it all, Would just fade away. But how much I reached out, To others when needed, Would be the true ...

THE GCE GIRL By: OLUSEGUN AKINSANYA

Every year we welcome into our community several teenagers between 13 and 17 from far and near. They are both male and female. They have the same mission. They have come to write General Certificate Examination (G.C.E). Most of them are penultimate students in secondary schools. These little fellows have been fixed at centres nearby to write their exams and the people that brought them have accommodation as part of the payment agreement. Some of these children are leaving home for the first time. Some of them look like mom's pets. Immediately they hit the town, you see a lot of ambiance and noise, something like a carnival. They make noise in the morning while looking for water for domestic use and in the evening when they are back from their different centres. It's always a new experience for most of them, and they seem to enjoy it: yea, they seem to enjoy being away from home for a whole month, a kind of escape from the eagle eyes of their parents; they seem to enjoy a t...
