ARISE O COMPATRIOT

So, this morning as i scrolled through my facebook timeline, i came across a post that was advocating a _topless_ protest to happen on the 12th of June, 2017. At first i was like 'really?' because my mind immediately went to the female folks.

I questioned whether they were inclusive and what silly idea is this. I think i read just about the opening two paragraphs and then scrolled to the comments box to see the reaction of fellow Nigerian youths and then i found people who thought likewise but then i also found the answer to our questions. The female folk were exempted from going _topless_. The idea still felt shallow and primitive to me because i thought of the outcome of such a protest.

I had this conviction that this is a step far from ameliorating our ills as a nation which called for rather concrete measures recalling the last fuel subsidy protests, sound ones at that. "If not anything, this could be more chaos brewing as casualties could arise.  I also thought for a moment, the frustration of the average Nigerian about the state of a dear Nation which sprung up the idea as also stated in the post. On the flip side, i also thought of the individuals the protest was directed towards, their demeanour, response and perception of such an idea to have a _topless_ protest.

They probably would've thought the youths unruly more say uncivilised or even thought them the more unready to assume the mantles of leadership. We need a solution, a revolution (a bloodless, violence-free one) but we need not be exuberant but to formulate them calmly and wisely. I would've just just read away like i would normally do but some comments triggered my response.

This was my comment on the post and i think its worth sharing:  _"And until the Youthful mind is exorcised of pomp, materialism and self aggrandisement, I'm sorry but all these would have been for folly._ _The average Nigerian youth is hardly equiped with the right and adequate knowledge to lead his own life lest a nation._ _Until we see beyond sports, gambling, social media tantrums and entertainment, until we learn to become selfless, to make due sacrifices, we will continue to be leaders of a tomorrow that will never come._ _We need to check and rectify ourselves._ _We seek to usurp a power that deprives us of our utopia but power will and only bend to a superpower._ _We must become that superpower if we must rescue this Nation and generations to come from dark oblivion and i must say that it is not by wielding sticks and stones but a sound mind, will and intellect._ _Arise O compatriot, Nigeria calls in pain, to serve our fatherland and its high time we begin to obey. May God help us."_

I'd like to leave us with this poem i wrote sometime ago:
*WE ARE YOUNG, WE ARE STRONG*

We are young, we are Strong.

We'll be the panacea when things go wrong.

On our necks is the future hung.

We'll walk the path even as it is filled with thongs.

We will persevere no matter how long.

They have failed us and for them to leave we shall beat the gong.

They can tie our hands but not our tongues.

To tomorrow's yam they pull the knife and think that those who own a share we are not among.

But to us it truly belongs.

We are young, we are Strong.

Its time to awaken for the road is long.

Painful letters By: Marvee

Every time I feel this way This terrifying kind of pain These twitchy palms and muffled sobs These weakened sights and mindless slob I would think of something To put me at ease, anything At times, to leave my world And be someone else, not a dud Often times I would write on plain sheet Write till my limbs felt weak Write till the page is covered in ink Write till the painful times shift.                                              ©-Marvee

The So Called Queen By:Salawu Olubunmi

_The so called queen of the zanger A woman of misery and deceptive appearance Wags tongue in a swordlike How angelic she be when seeking the honey frm it's comb With her romantic but deceitful display The first sight of her left me in dismay First encounter with her was heartrending Such a sweet poison A devil in disguise wit an angelic face The so called queen can neither be embraced nor avoided.

THE GCE GIRL By: OLUSEGUN AKINSANYA

Every year we welcome into our community several teenagers between 13 and 17 from far and near. They are both male and female. They have the same mission. They have come to write General Certificate Examination (G.C.E). Most of them are penultimate students in secondary schools. These little fellows have been fixed at centres nearby to write their exams and the people that brought them have accommodation as part of the payment agreement. Some of these children are leaving home for the first time. Some of them look like mom's pets. Immediately they hit the town, you see a lot of ambiance and noise, something like a carnival. They make noise in the morning while looking for water for domestic use and in the evening when they are back from their different centres. It's always a new experience for most of them, and they seem to enjoy it: yea, they seem to enjoy being away from home for a whole month, a kind of escape from the eagle eyes of their parents; they seem to enjoy a t...
