UNDERSTANDING PERIHELION IN RELATION TO OZONE DEPLETION By: Oluwajimi.J.Thorpe

As we have moved into the first month of the year, we must have been noticing some changes in our environment e.g. the degree of the increase of solar radiation received on a daily base on the surface of the Earth, especially  the degree of solar radiation received in the equator.

Geographically this period is referred to as the PERIHELION, it’s gotten from two Greek words ‘’PERI’’ meaning ‘’CLOSE’’ and ‘’HELION’’ meaning ‘’SUN’’, by my own definition perihelion can be defined as period in which Earth is at the closest to the sun, this period the Earth tend to receive more ultra-violent radiation due to the closeness to the sun.

The PERIHELION starts from Jan 3 to about June, the temperature during this season is always on the high side, Some of the features is that we tend to have shorter night and longer day, high temperature (high sweating rate) etc.

Due to the effect of climate change on the environment, especially the depletion of the Ozone layer in the atmosphere, research has proved that about 20% of the ozone layer has deteriorated, meaning that they are holes in the ozone layer.

I guess some people may not understand some terms here, what I am trying to say is that the atmospheric shield that covers human from the sun is breaking due to some of our activities.
The relationship between the perihelion and Ozone depletion is that at the PERIHELION PERIOD the sun is at its closest distance to the earth, the harmful human activities comes in which tend to lead to the Ozone depletion, which will finally change humanity system if we don’t change our ways so that coming generations can benefit from the atmosphere.

The rate of solar radiation received on the earth surface for decade has been increasing, due to many factors, but the basic reason in which the solar radiation will become harmful is when humanity tend not to have any Ozone layer covering us from the sun, i believe at that point in time someone out there will see the need to save the earth.

EACH GENERATION MUST LEAVE AN ENVIRONMENT THAT IS SAFE FOR THE NEXT FIVE GENERATION.

The issue of global warming and climate change has no human master, it is an issue that humanity can’t understand to the root.

We haven’t learnt how to balance DEVELOPMENT with ENVIRONMENT.

ANY NEW TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION TENDS TO AID DIRECTLY OR DIRECTLY TO THE DEPLETION OF THE ENVIRONMENT.

Our problem is that we just tend to think about the problem it is solving, we don’t think about the box of problems that it’s creating, when we start thinking about the effect of this on the environment we will tend to have a healthy environment.

And again humanity is full of greed, we are just interested on the ECONOMY without considering the major source in which this resources is gotten from, because all of us just want to be rich and powerful without caring about the environment that will be available for generations to come.

The point I am trying to bring in this write up is that due to the rate in which the Ozone layer is depleting, if humanity tend not to change their ways, generations to come will have to change their system of working, in which they will have to work in the night and sleep during the day.

I know someone out there will be saying i am talking nonsense, but let's open up to the truth and face reality that will save planet Earth, we need another economic revolution that will consider the environment.

Echoes of My Soul By: Similafleur

It’s Dangerous to use broom to mash ‘ewedu,’ Gastroenterologist warns

Using a small bunch of broomsticks, known as ijabe, to mash ewedu (mallow-leaves) is very common among Nigerians when preparing the slimy soup. However, medical experts have said that the age-old practice is actually fraught with dangers. Ewedu is also known as Rama ayoyo  among Hausa, while the Igbo call it Kerenkere. Dr. Adegboyega Akere of the Department of Medicine, University College Hospital, Ibadan, on Wednesday, advised women and caterers to desist from the practice. Akere, a Consultant Gastroenterologist, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Ibadan that food handlers should always use blender for ewedu and every other ingredient used in cooking it. “They should not use broom to mash the vegetable,” he said. Akere said this is because ewedu soup that is mashed with broomsticks could still retain splinters of the broom, however minute. He said that when eaten, the splinters from the broomsticks could get trapped inside the oesophagus or the intestine. Akere ...

Painful letters By: Marvee

Every time I feel this way This terrifying kind of pain These twitchy palms and muffled sobs These weakened sights and mindless slob I would think of something To put me at ease, anything At times, to leave my world And be someone else, not a dud Often times I would write on plain sheet Write till my limbs felt weak Write till the page is covered in ink Write till the painful times shift.                                              ©-Marvee
