God save Nigeria's compatriots By: Oluwajimi Thorpe

God Save the Queen" is the national anthem of most Commonwealth Nations who have colonial ties with the British Empire. The author of “God Save the Queen/King" is unknown, but, in 1619 attribute was given to John Bull who galvanized the anthem. “God Save the Queen" was first sung in today's Lagos, Nigeria; to be precise, Badagry which was made an annex of the British colony in 1861. In 1887, modern Nigeria was being colonized by the British. Suffice to say, the amalgamation and establishment of the Protectorate of Nigeria in 1914 made “God Save the Queen" our national anthem.

"Nigeria, We Hail Thee" became the Anthem that was adopted in 1960; the year of independence and replaced the previous Anthem “God Save the Queen."  "Nigeria, We Hail Thee" was written by British expatriates, Lillian Jean Williams and music by Frances Berda which was being used from independence in 1960-1978.

"Arise, O Compatriots", the National Anthem of our great Country Nigeria was written by a group of Nigerians; John A. Ilechukwu, Eme Etim Akpan, B. A. Ogunnaike, Sota Omoigui and P. O. Aderibigbe and the Nigeria police band under the directorship of Benedict E. Odiase who gave it the musical tune. "Arise, O Compatriots"has remained Nigeria anthem 1978-present.

The National Anthem
"Arise, O compatriots, Nigeria's call obey
To serve our fatherland
With love and strength and faith"

We are all Compatriots of this great Nation, Nigeria. Called to serve our Father's Land with Love, Strength & Faith.

"The labor of our heroes past
Shall never be in vain
To serve with heart and might
One nation bound in freedom, peace, and unity"

We are called (6 Geo-political zones) to serve with Heart and Might being One Nation bound in Freedom (Federalism), Thus, would bring Peace & Unity to our great Nation Nigeria.

"Oh God of creation, direct our noble cause
Guide our leaders right"

Oh God of Creation, direct our noble cause (Freedom) & guild our leaders right (Corruption)

"Help our youth and truth to know
In love and honesty to grow
And living just and true"

Help our youth the truth to know in Love, Honesty. To live a just & True life (The Future)

"Great lofty heights attain
To build a nation where peace and justice shall reign"

To achieve this lofty height, we need Nigerians with a positive perspective of dichotomy in our Nation Nigeria.

The National Pledge
I pledge to Nigeria my country.
To be faithful, loyal and honest.
To serve Nigeria with all my strength.
To defend her unity, and uphold her honor   and glory.
 So help me God.

"We tend to have the key, but we haven't decoded the treasurable secret in our National Anthem"

"The National Anthem is History begotten & to come"

God bless Nigeria, God bless Nigeria.

I remain my humble self Oluwajimi Thorpe

Happy Independence Day.

Painful letters By: Marvee

Every time I feel this way This terrifying kind of pain These twitchy palms and muffled sobs These weakened sights and mindless slob I would think of something To put me at ease, anything At times, to leave my world And be someone else, not a dud Often times I would write on plain sheet Write till my limbs felt weak Write till the page is covered in ink Write till the painful times shift.                                              ©-Marvee

THE GCE GIRL By: OLUSEGUN AKINSANYA

Every year we welcome into our community several teenagers between 13 and 17 from far and near. They are both male and female. They have the same mission. They have come to write General Certificate Examination (G.C.E). Most of them are penultimate students in secondary schools. These little fellows have been fixed at centres nearby to write their exams and the people that brought them have accommodation as part of the payment agreement. Some of these children are leaving home for the first time. Some of them look like mom's pets. Immediately they hit the town, you see a lot of ambiance and noise, something like a carnival. They make noise in the morning while looking for water for domestic use and in the evening when they are back from their different centres. It's always a new experience for most of them, and they seem to enjoy it: yea, they seem to enjoy being away from home for a whole month, a kind of escape from the eagle eyes of their parents; they seem to enjoy a t...
