POWER IS THE GREATEST WEAKNESS OF MAN By: Olusegun Akinsanya

Humans have a lot of notable weaknesses. But three of the weaknesses are responsible for most of the evil that we are witnessing in the world. Why do people kill, destroy and fight with each other? There are several underlining reasons for all these evil.

Humans lust for three things more than they do for others things. These major inordinate desires are: sexual pleasure, love of money and lust for power. None of the first two is as lethal and destructive as lust for power. The desire to dominate others and rule over them is the greatest undoing of mankind.

This lust for power manifests in jealousy, hatred, acrimony, party spirit, backstabbing, envy, prejudice and so on. There is a story trending online, about a young child in a very popular private secondary school in Lagos who poured chemicals in the water bottle of his colleague, just because, the said colleague was always ahead of him in school examination. He nearly succeeded in killing that little innocent fellow just because of his desire to be the first in the class. That was exactly what Cain did. That is what some politicians do.

It is quite pertinent to know that the race of life should not be a do or die affair. What will be will be. The desire for sex wanes with age and the inordinate quest for money simmers down after a while, but even while a person is close to his grave or his health could not withstand the rigorousness of elected office, the animal instinct to always try to cling to power dies hard in man.

Painful letters By: Marvee

THE GCE GIRL By: OLUSEGUN AKINSANYA

Every year we welcome into our community several teenagers between 13 and 17 from far and near. They are both male and female. They have the same mission. They have come to write General Certificate Examination (G.C.E). Most of them are penultimate students in secondary schools. These little fellows have been fixed at centres nearby to write their exams and the people that brought them have accommodation as part of the payment agreement. Some of these children are leaving home for the first time. Some of them look like mom's pets. Immediately they hit the town, you see a lot of ambiance and noise, something like a carnival. They make noise in the morning while looking for water for domestic use and in the evening when they are back from their different centres. It's always a new experience for most of them, and they seem to enjoy it: yea, they seem to enjoy being away from home for a whole month, a kind of escape from the eagle eyes of their parents; they seem to enjoy a t...
